Domain Types

Alpha Domain

A domain composed entirely of letters — no numbers, hyphens, or special characters.

What Is Alpha Domain?

An alpha domain is a domain name made up exclusively of alphabetic characters — letters only, with no numbers, hyphens, underscores, or special characters. Examples include Google.com, Apple.com, and Spotify.com.

Alpha domains are generally considered more valuable than domains containing numbers or hyphens because they're easier to communicate verbally, less prone to confusion, and look cleaner. The term is mostly used in domain investing circles to categorize and filter domain portfolios.

Within alpha domains, further distinctions exist: vowel-consonant patterns (CVCVC, like 'Lumex'), pronounceability, and word vs. non-word strings all affect perceived quality and value.

Alpha vs. non-alpha

Spotify.com (alpha, clean) vs. 1800flowers.com (numeric, works for their brand but harder to communicate).

Why This Matters for Startups

For your startup, stick with alpha domains unless you have a very specific reason to include numbers (like Web3 or 365-related branding). Letters-only domains are easier to share verbally — crucial for word-of-mouth marketing. When someone recommends your product, they should be able to say the name without spelling it out.
