Numeric Domain

A domain consisting entirely of numbers — a specialized category with strong Asian market demand.

What Is Numeric Domain?

A numeric domain is a domain name composed entirely of numbers, such as 360.com, 123.com, or 8888.com. These domains are a distinct category in domain investing with their own valuation dynamics, driven largely by demand from Chinese and Asian markets.

In Chinese culture, numbers carry specific meanings: 8 (ba) sounds like 'prosperity,' 6 (liu) sounds like 'smooth,' 9 (jiu) sounds like 'longevity,' while 4 (si) sounds like 'death' and is avoided. These cultural associations create dramatic price differences between number combinations.

Notable numeric domain sales include 360.com (reportedly $17 million to Qihoo 360), demonstrating the extraordinary value that numeric domains can achieve. The market is predominantly served by Chinese auction platforms and investors.

Why This Matters for Startups

Numeric domains are a specialized niche with limited relevance for most Western startups. Unless your brand is inherently number-based (like 1-800 numbers translated to domains, or mathematical/financial products), a pronounceable, meaningful name will serve you better. The exception: if you're targeting Chinese or Asian markets, understanding numeric domain values is essential.
