What Is Hyphenated Domain?
A hyphenated domain is a domain name that includes one or more hyphens between words, such as best-coffee-shop.com or e-learning.net. Hyphens are one of the few special characters allowed in domain names (along with numbers).
In general, hyphenated domains are valued 20–30% less than their non-hyphenated equivalents. They're harder to communicate verbally ('dash' or 'hyphen' must be spelled out), more prone to user error, and look less professional than clean, unhyphenated names.
However, certain categories of hyphenated domains retain or even gain value: established compound terms with natural hyphens (e-commerce, e-learning, anti-virus), certain prefix patterns (e-, my-, i-), and in some European markets where hyphenated domains are more culturally accepted.
Why This Matters for Startups
For most startups, avoid hyphens in your primary domain. When someone hears your brand name, they'll try typing it without hyphens first — sending traffic to a competitor or a parked page. If your preferred unhyphenated .com is taken, you're better off choosing a different name or TLD than adding hyphens. The exception: if your brand naturally includes a hyphen (like an e-commerce platform) and you also own the unhyphenated version as a redirect.
