What Is Transfer?
A domain transfer is the process of moving a domain name from one registrar to another (inter-registrar transfer) or changing the domain's registered owner (registrant transfer). Each type follows specific procedures with security safeguards to prevent unauthorized transfers.
Inter-registrar transfers require: unlocking the domain at the current registrar, obtaining an EPP/authorization code, initiating the transfer at the new registrar, and confirming via email. The process typically takes 5–7 days and costs the price of one year's registration at the new registrar (which extends your registration by one year).
Registrant transfers (changing who owns the domain) may trigger a 60-day transfer lock under ICANN rules, preventing the domain from being moved to a different registrar during that period.
Why This Matters for Startups
You'll perform domain transfers when consolidating your domains to one registrar, when purchasing a domain from a seller (transferring it to your account), or when switching registrars for better pricing or features. The process is straightforward but takes several days — plan accordingly. Never initiate a transfer during a critical business period. After a purchase, complete the transfer promptly to ensure you have full control of your new domain.
