EPP Code

A unique authorization code required to transfer a domain from one registrar to another.

What Is EPP Code?

An EPP code (Extensible Provisioning Protocol code), also called an authorization code, auth code, or transfer code, is a unique password assigned to each domain name that must be provided to initiate a registrar transfer. It's a security measure to prevent unauthorized domain transfers.

When you want to transfer your domain from one registrar to another (e.g., from GoDaddy to Dynadot), you request the EPP code from your current registrar, then provide it to the new registrar to authorize the transfer. Without the correct EPP code, the transfer will be rejected.

EPP codes are typically 8–16 characters containing letters, numbers, and special characters. They can be regenerated if lost and are usually available through your registrar's control panel.

Why This Matters for Startups

You'll need an EPP code whenever you transfer a domain between registrars — which might happen when consolidating your domains to one registrar, switching to a registrar with better pricing, or transferring a purchased domain into your account. The process is straightforward: unlock the domain, get the EPP code, provide it to the new registrar, confirm the transfer via email. The whole process takes 5–7 days. Make sure your domain email is accessible, as transfer confirmations go there.
