What Is Search Volume?
Search volume is the average number of times a specific keyword or phrase is searched in search engines over a given period, typically measured monthly. In domain valuation, search volume indicates the commercial demand for a keyword and influences the value of domains containing that keyword.
Tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz provide search volume data. Higher search volume generally indicates more commercial opportunity — a domain matching a keyword with 100,000 monthly searches is more valuable than one matching a keyword with 100 searches.
However, search volume alone doesn't determine domain value. Brandability, memorability, TLD, and the specific buyer pool all matter. A brandable domain with zero keyword search volume can be worth more than a keyword domain with high search volume if the brand story is stronger.
Why This Matters for Startups
Use search volume data during domain selection to understand market demand. If you're choosing between two domain options, the one that aligns with higher search volume may attract more organic traffic. But don't let search volume override brandability — the best startup names create their own search volume through brand building. Nobody searched for 'Spotify' before Spotify existed.
