What Is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a query and response protocol used to look up information about domain name registrations. A WHOIS lookup reveals (depending on privacy settings) the registrant's name, organization, contact details, registration and expiration dates, nameservers, and registrar information.
WHOIS data has become significantly less detailed since GDPR implementation in 2018. Many registrars now redact personal information by default, showing only the registrar's contact details and the domain's status/dates. This has changed how domain investors, trademark enforcers, and researchers access ownership information.
WHOIS lookups can be performed through web-based tools (who.is, whois.domaintools.com), command-line tools, or registrar websites. The newer RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is gradually replacing the legacy WHOIS protocol with a more structured, privacy-aware system.
Why This Matters for Startups
Use WHOIS to research domains before purchasing: check the registration date (older registrations may indicate existing authority), expiration date (upcoming expiration could mean a drop opportunity), registrar (reputable registrar is a good sign), and nameservers (can indicate what platform hosts the site). When reaching out to a domain owner to buy, WHOIS contact information may be your only channel — though GDPR redaction increasingly means you'll need to use marketplace contact forms or broker services instead.
