URS (Uniform Rapid Suspension)

A fast-track process to suspend domains infringing clear-cut trademarks — quicker but narrower than UDRP.

What Is URS (Uniform Rapid Suspension)?

The URS (Uniform Rapid Suspension) is a dispute resolution mechanism for new gTLDs that provides faster resolution than UDRP for clear-cut cases of trademark infringement. URS was introduced as part of ICANN's New gTLD Program to handle the increased volume of potential disputes across hundreds of new extensions.

URS proceedings are faster (typically resolved within 30 days) and cheaper (filing fees around $300–$500) than UDRP. However, the standard of proof is higher — URS is designed for 'clear and convincing' cases of infringement, not borderline disputes.

The remedy in URS is domain suspension (the website is taken down and the domain is frozen) rather than transfer. The domain remains suspended for the remainder of its registration period. If the registrant wants to contest the suspension, they can file an appeal.

Why This Matters for Startups

URS is useful when someone registers your brand name on a new gTLD (.app, .xyz, .tech, etc.) in an obvious case of cybersquatting. It's faster and cheaper than UDRP, making it ideal for clear-cut cases. However, if you want the domain transferred to you (not just suspended), UDRP is the better choice. URS only suspends — it doesn't give you the domain.
