What Is Typo Domain?
A typo domain is a domain name intentionally registered as a common misspelling, typo, or keyboard error of a popular website. Also known as typosquatting domains, they exploit the fact that users frequently mistype URLs — hitting adjacent keys, doubling letters, or omitting characters.
Typo domains exist in a legal and ethical gray area. When targeting trademarked names, they can lead to UDRP disputes and legal liability. When targeting generic terms, they're generally legal but still considered ethically questionable by many in the industry.
Common typo patterns include: letter transposition (exmaple vs. example), adjacent key errors (gomgle vs. google), missing characters (gogle vs. google), and phonetic misspellings (flickr vs. flicker).
Why This Matters for Startups
Protect your startup by registering the most common typos of your brand name. Identify the 2–3 most likely misspellings based on keyboard proximity, common letter transpositions, and phonetic variations. Set up 301 redirects from these typo domains to your correct domain. This captures misdirected traffic and prevents competitors or malicious actors from exploiting your brand's misspellings.
