Domain Lifecycle

Pending Delete

The final 5-day stage before an expired domain is released back to the public pool.

What Is Pending Delete?

Pending delete is the final stage in a domain's expiration lifecycle — a 5-day period during which the domain cannot be renewed, transferred, or modified. It's essentially in a queue for deletion from the registry database.

Once a domain enters pending delete, its fate is sealed — it will be released to the public pool at a specific drop time. This is when drop catching services attempt to register the domain the instant it becomes available.

The pending delete stage follows the grace period (30–45 days, renewable at standard price) and redemption period (30 days, renewable at premium price). Once pending delete begins, the domain is gone from the current owner's control.

Why This Matters for Startups

If you're tracking a domain through its expiration cycle, the pending delete stage is your signal to ensure backorders are in place. Once a domain enters pending delete, it will drop in exactly 5 days. This is your last chance to prepare. Have accounts set up with drop catching services and backorders placed before this stage — last-minute preparations are risky.
