One-Word Domain

A domain consisting of a single dictionary word — among the most premium and expensive domain types.

What Is One-Word Domain?

A one-word domain consists of a single dictionary word as its second-level domain — like Hotels.com, Voice.com, or Apple.com. These represent the apex of domain value because they're maximally memorable, naturally authoritative, and describe entire categories in a single term.

One-word .com domains are almost entirely spoken for — every common English word has been registered on .com for decades. They trade exclusively on the aftermarket at prices ranging from thousands (obscure words) to tens of millions (category-defining terms).

On alternative TLDs, one-word domains are more accessible. Single dictionary words on .io, .ai, .co, and .cc are available at significantly lower prices than their .com counterparts, though they still command premiums within their respective TLD markets.

One-word domain spectrum

Voice.com ($30M on .com) vs. Sound.ai ($215K on .ai) vs. Equip.co ($25K on .co) — same concept, vastly different price points.

Why This Matters for Startups

Owning a single dictionary word as your domain is the ultimate brand asset — but it comes with an ultimate price tag on .com. A more practical approach: find a strong single word on an alternative TLD that fits your brand. Sound.ai ($215K) and Equip.co ($25K) show that one-word domains on non-.com extensions can still be powerful brands at a fraction of the .com price.
