EMD (Exact Match Domain)

A domain that exactly matches a search query, such as CheapFlights.com for 'cheap flights.'

What Is EMD (Exact Match Domain)?

An EMD (Exact Match Domain) is a domain name that exactly matches a popular search query. For example, CheapFlights.com matches the search 'cheap flights,' and CarInsurance.com matches 'car insurance.' EMDs were historically extremely valuable for SEO because search engines gave ranking preference to domains matching the search query.

Google's 2012 EMD Update reduced the automatic ranking advantage of exact match domains, but EMDs still carry some SEO benefit — particularly when the website has quality content to back up the keyword-rich domain. More importantly, EMDs provide instant brand recognition and user trust for the specific topic.

EMDs are most valuable in commercial categories with high search volume and CPC — insurance, finance, travel, real estate. They're less relevant for startups building unique brands, since EMDs describe a category rather than creating a distinct identity.

EMD vs. brandable

CarInsurance.com (EMD — describes the category) vs. Lemonade.com (brandable — unique insurance brand).

Why This Matters for Startups

For most startups, building a unique brand is more valuable than owning a category keyword domain. Zapier.com (brandable) is a stronger brand than AutomationTools.com (EMD) because it's distinctive and own-able. However, if your business is category-focused — like a comparison site or marketplace — an EMD can provide a powerful starting advantage. The decision comes down to: are you building a brand, or owning a category?
