Domain Terminology

Domainer

A person who invests in domain names professionally — your potential seller when buying a premium domain.

What Is Domainer?

A domainer is a person who buys, sells, and manages domain names as a business or profession. Domainers range from hobbyists with small portfolios to full-time professionals managing thousands of domains worth millions of dollars collectively.

Professional domainers have deep knowledge of domain valuation, market trends, trademark law, and negotiation tactics. They acquire domains through hand registration, auctions, drops, and private acquisitions — then sell them to end users (businesses that will actually use the domain) or other investors.

The domainer community is active on forums like NamePros and DNForum, at conferences like NamesCon, and through industry publications like DNJournal and Domain Name Wire.

Why This Matters for Startups

When you buy a premium domain for your startup, you're likely buying from a domainer. Understanding their perspective helps you negotiate better. Domainers know their domains' value and have patience — they're not desperate to sell. Approach negotiations with respect, do your research on comparable sales, and make reasonable offers. Starting with a lowball offer can backfire; starting with a fair offer informed by market data opens productive conversations.
