Appraisal

A professional or automated assessment of a domain's market value based on multiple factors.

What Is Appraisal?

A domain appraisal is an estimate of a domain name's market value. Appraisals can be automated (using algorithms that analyze length, keywords, TLD, and comparable sales) or professional (conducted by experienced domain brokers or appraisal services).

The most reliable appraisals consider multiple factors: domain length, keyword relevance and search volume, TLD extension, comparable aftermarket sales (comps), brandability, existing traffic, backlink profile, and trademark status.

However, domain valuation is not an exact science. Automated tools often underestimate brandable domains — for example, ordex.ai was appraised at $539 by algorithmic tools but actually sold for $5,999. This is because algorithms struggle to assess brandability and market demand for unique names.

Appraisal gap example

ordex.ai was algorithmically appraised at $539 but sold for $5,999 — a 10x gap showing the limits of automated valuation.

Why This Matters for Startups

Understanding domain appraisals helps you whether you're buying or selling. As a buyer, an appraisal helps you determine a fair price and avoid overpaying. As a seller, it helps you set competitive asking prices. Our Domain Appraisal Tool provides three price points — quick sale, realistic market, and ideal buyer — giving you a more complete picture than single-number estimates.
